This year's theme for Fire Prevention week is   STAY FIRE SMART - DON'T GET BURNED and focuses on burn Awareness and safety.

Fire Prevention Week 2009

A few tips:

Remember to always be careful with anything flammable or hot.  Take care with pots and pans on stoves--do
NOT leave the handle hang over at a point where is can be spilled or pulled over by a young child.  Be careful what you wear when cooking as loose sleeves or garments can catch fire from the open flame of a gas stove or from the electric burner.

If your clothes catch fire -
STOP, DROP and ROLL  Do NOT
run away as it will fan the flames and make matters worse.

If you do get burned - immediately place the affected area under cool water for at least five minutes to
COOL A BURNDo NOT
use butter as it will continue to cook the burned area, aloe which does not work in the initial moments after a burn or ice as the ice will also burn but in a different way - cold burn or in some cases the ice cube can still to your skin.

For more information, contact your local fire department or go to
NFPA.org
.

Have a fire and burn safe week (October 4-10) and remember - Fire Safety is an all year round concept.  It never takes a vacation!
